Construite de babilonieni in jurul anului 600 i.Hr., se pare ca aceste gradini create artificial ar fi fost o constructie compusa din mai multe terase suprapuse, retrase succesiv, pe care erau amenajate gradini cu o vegetatie luxurianta. Gradinile Suspendate din Babilon erau la acea vreme unice pe plan arhitectonic.
